The United States has launched another round of large-scale airstrikes against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria, escalating its military response to last month’s deadly ambush that killed two US soldiers and one American civilian interpreter.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes were carried out at around 12:30 pm ET on Saturday in coordination with partner forces. Multiple ISIS targets were hit across various locations in Syria.
The strikes are part of Operation Hawkeye Strike, an ongoing military campaign ordered by President Donald Trump following the ISIS attack in Palmyra last month. The ambush claimed the lives of Sgt Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, Sgt William Nathaniel Howard—both members of the Iowa National Guard—and Ayad Mansoor Sakat, a civilian interpreter supporting US forces.
“Our message remains strong: if you harm our warfighters, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world, no matter how hard you try to evade justice,” CENTCOM said in a statement on Saturday.
Operation Hawkeye Strike was launched on December 19, when US forces carried out another major assault, striking 70 ISIS-linked targets across central Syria. Those strikes targeted terrorist infrastructure, command centres and weapons storage facilities.
US officials said the latest operation underscores Washington’s commitment to eliminating ISIS remnants in the region and preventing future attacks on American personnel and allies.
