Indore Water Contamination: Six Dead, Over 200 Hospitalised, Says Collector
At least six people have died and more than 200 patients are undergoing treatment following an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea caused by contaminated drinking water in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city, a senior official said on Saturday.
At least six people have died and more than 200 patients are undergoing treatment following an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea caused by contaminated drinking water in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city, a senior official said on Saturday.
Indore Collector Shivam Verma told PTI Videos that 203 patients are currently admitted to 41 hospitals across the city, of whom 34 are in intensive care units (ICUs) and are being closely monitored.
The official clarification came amid conflicting claims over the death toll. While Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava on Friday said he had received information about 10 deaths, residents of the affected Bhagirathpura area claimed that 16 people, including a six-month-old child, had died due to the outbreak.
In response to the health crisis, the Madhya Pradesh government has taken strict administrative action. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered the transfer of Indore Municipal Commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav and the suspension of two senior officials—Additional Municipal Commissioner Rohit Sissoniya and in-charge Superintendent Engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department Sanjeev Shrivastava.
The state government, in a status report submitted to the High Court, stated that the diarrhoeal outbreak caused by contaminated water supply is now under effective control, with round-the-clock monitoring in place to prevent any recurrence.
Health authorities continue surveillance in the affected localities, while efforts are underway to ensure the supply of safe drinking water and prevent further spread of the illness.
