Himachal Pradesh : Himachal Pradesh University Set to Introduce Part-Time PhD Courses from Next Academic Year

Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is set to introduce part-time Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) programmes from the upcoming academic year, following approval by the Executive Council of the university.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Executive Council held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Prof Mahavir Singh. The move is aimed at providing greater academic flexibility to working professionals and researchers who wish to pursue doctoral studies alongside their professional commitments.

In another significant decision, the council approved the introduction of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) programmes across all colleges affiliated with HPU, reflecting the university’s focus on emerging technologies and industry-oriented education.

The council also sanctioned the creation of one post of Academic Counsellor in the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), in line with University Grants Commission (UGC) norms. The appointed counsellor will be responsible for conducting personal contact programmes, preparing study material, and evaluating assignments and projects for distance and online learners.

Additionally, the Executive Council approved all recommendations put forward by the Finance Committee and the Academic Council. It also gave its nod to the appointment of one Assistant Professor each in Physics and Electronics & Communication Engineering, based on the recommendations of the respective selection committees.

University officials said the decisions would strengthen academic standards, promote research opportunities and enhance the quality of higher education at HPU.
