BCCI Directs KKR to Release Bangladesh Pacer Mustafizur Rahman Ahead of IPL 2026
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has directed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from its squad ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, citing recent developments affecting bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh.
KKR had acquired the services of the 30-year-old left-arm fast bowler for Rs 9.20 crore, following a bidding war with Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals, from a base price of Rs 2 crore at the players’ auction held last month.
Confirming the development, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said the franchise would be permitted to name a replacement if required.
“The BCCI has asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman from its squad. They can ask for a replacement, if needed, and upon request, the BCCI will allow a replacement player,” Saikia told PTI on Saturday.
When asked about the reason behind the decision, Saikia said, “Because of recent developments all across,” without elaborating further.
Sources indicated that pressure had been mounting on the BCCI over Rahman’s participation amid heightened tensions in India-Bangladesh relations, particularly following recent incidents of violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh. India has expressed concern over the safety of minorities in the neighbouring country.
KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan also came under political scrutiny following Rahman’s signing, with several leaders criticising the franchise’s decision in view of the alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
Mustafizur Rahman, popularly known as The Fizz, has previously played for multiple IPL franchises and is regarded as one of Bangladesh’s most experienced fast bowlers in limited-overs cricket.
KKR is expected to announce a replacement player in the coming days.
