At least 13 people were killed and 98 others injured on Sunday after a passenger train derailed on the interoceanic corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Railway in southern Mexico, officials said.

According to the Mexican Navy Secretariat, which oversees the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the accident occurred on the Salina Cruz–Coatzacoalcos route. The train, operating on Line Z, was carrying around 250 passengers at the time of the derailment.

Of the 98 injured passengers, 36 are undergoing treatment in hospitals, while the remaining sustained minor injuries. Authorities said 139 passengers were reported to be out of danger.

“As a result of this accident, 139 people are out of danger, 98 were injured — 36 of whom are receiving hospital medical care — and, regrettably, 13 people lost their lives,” the Navy said in a statement.

The Secretariat expressed deep condolences to the families of those who died and reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and full legal compliance while ensuring immediate assistance to those affected.

Following the accident, large-scale search-and-rescue operations were launched, involving 360 naval personnel, 20 vehicles, four ground ambulances, three air ambulances and a tactical drone to support emergency response efforts.

Authorities said investigations are under way to determine the cause of the derailment, and coordination with relevant agencies will continue to ensure support for victims and their families.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo directed the Secretary of the Navy and the Deputy Secretary of Human Rights from the Secretariat of the Interior to visit the accident site and personally attend to the affected families.

She said injured passengers are being treated at IMSS hospitals in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz, as well as IMSS-Wellbeing hospitals in Juchitán and Ixtepec. She also instructed local delegates to assist in medical and relief operations, with the Interior Secretary coordinating overall efforts.
