Donald Trump : Trump Says Ukraine–Russia ‘Closer Than Ever’ to Peace After Talks with Zelensky
After meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump said Ukraine and Russia are closer than ever to a peace deal, though he cautioned that negotiations remain complex and fragile.
US President Donald Trump on Sunday said Ukraine and Russia are “closer than ever before” to reaching a peace agreement, following talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his Florida resort. However, he acknowledged that negotiations remain complicated and could still collapse, potentially prolonging the war for years.
Trump’s remarks came after his meeting with Zelensky, which followed what he described as an “excellent” two-and-a-half-hour phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began nearly four years ago.
Despite continued Russian attacks on Ukraine even as Zelensky travelled to the United States, Trump said he believed Putin remained interested in peace.
“Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed,” Trump said at a late afternoon news conference, standing alongside Zelensky. He repeatedly praised the Ukrainian leader, describing him as “brave”.
Both leaders admitted that major challenges remain unresolved. These include the future of Ukrainian territories currently under Russian control and the nature of security guarantees that would ensure Ukraine is not invaded again.
Following their meeting, Trump and Zelensky held a joint call with several European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the leaders of Finland, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Poland.
Zelensky said Trump had agreed to host European leaders again, possibly at the White House, sometime in January. Trump said the meeting could take place in Washington or “someplace”.
Thanking Trump for his efforts, Zelensky said, “Ukraine is ready for peace.”
