The United States on Thursday (local time) carried out what President Donald Trump described as a “powerful and deadly” strike against the Islamic State (ISIS) in northwest Nigeria, citing the group’s alleged targeting and killing of Christians.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said the operation was launched under his direction as Commander-in-Chief in response to escalating violence attributed to ISIS militants in the region.

“Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS terrorist scum in northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years,” Trump wrote. He added that he had previously warned the group to stop the killings or face severe consequences.

Trump said the operation involved “numerous perfect strikes,” crediting what he termed the unmatched capabilities of the US military. Reiterating his administration’s stance, he said the United States would not allow radical Islamic terrorism to flourish under his leadership.

“May God bless our military, and Merry Christmas to all,” the President added in the post.

According to the US National Counterterrorism Center, ISIS-West Africa emerged in 2015 after Boko Haram pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. The group is known to target regional military forces, government infrastructure, civilian defence units and Christian communities across parts of West Africa.
