Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today directed that the inquiry into the alleged assault of a patient by a resident doctor at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, be completed by December 24, and that appropriate action be taken without delay.

The Chief Minister held a meeting with senior officials of the Health Department, IGMC Shimla and the Directorate of Medical Education to review the incident that occurred on December 22. He sought a detailed factual report on all aspects of the case.

Emphasising professional conduct, Sukhu said that behaviour in institutions must always be polite, calm and responsible, as it reflects not only an individual’s character but also the reputation of the institution.

“Doctors trained at IGMC have brought recognition to Himachal Pradesh both nationally and internationally. However, the incident at IGMC is completely unacceptable. Indiscipline will not be tolerated in any institution,” the Chief Minister said.

Sukhu also directed the Directorate of Medical Education to introduce mandatory induction training for doctors joining medical colleges as senior residents. He reviewed the senior residency process in detail and issued necessary guidelines to improve professional standards.

Highlighting reforms in the health sector, the Chief Minister said the state government has undertaken several ambitious initiatives in medical education over the past three years. World-class standards are being adopted to provide a better working environment for doctors and paramedical staff, he added.

He said the government will spend over Rs 3,000 crore to enhance modern healthcare services, as well as for the development and expansion of health infrastructure across the state. Sukhu further noted that medical equipment more than two decades old is being replaced with modern and advanced technology.

Health Minister Dhani Ram Shandil also attended the meeting and shared key suggestions related to strengthening medical education and institutional discipline.
