IGMC Shimla News : Resident doctor suspended for assaulting patient at IGMC after video goes viral
A resident doctor at IGMC Shimla was suspended after a video showing him assaulting a patient went viral, triggering protests and public outrage.
A young resident doctor at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), Shimla, was suspended on Monday after he allegedly assaulted a patient inside the hospital, an incident that sparked public outrage and protests on the premises.
A video recorded by a patient’s attendant, showing the doctor repeatedly punching a patient lying on a hospital bed, went viral on social media, drawing widespread condemnation.
IGMC Medical Superintendent Dr Rahul Rao said the patient, a resident of Kupvi area in Shimla district, had undergone a bronchoscopy procedure earlier in the day.
“He was advised rest and asked to return after two hours for an X-ray. Later, he went to the pulmonary ward, where an altercation took place between him and the resident doctor,” Dr Rao said.
The patient, identified as Arjun Panwar, alleged that the incident was triggered by the doctor’s rude behaviour.
“I was having difficulty breathing and was lying on the bed. The doctor spoke to me rudely. When I asked him to mind his language, he attacked me,” Panwar alleged.
Following the incident, attendants and members of the public gathered outside the hospital, demanding the immediate suspension and arrest of the doctor. The patient’s family also lodged a police complaint.
The hospital administration initially constituted a three-member inquiry committee, tasked with submitting its report by the evening. However, protesters refused to disperse, prompting the deployment of police personnel to maintain law and order.
“The Chief Minister took note of the incident and sought a detailed report. Based on the directions received, the doctor has been suspended with immediate effect until further orders,” Dr Rao said.
The protesters dispersed only after the suspension order was announced.
