Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Sunday launched the state-level Intensified Pulse Polio Campaign at Kamla Nehru Hospital, Shimla, on the occasion of National Immunisation Day. Under the campaign, nearly six lakh children up to the age of five will be administered polio drops at 5,793 booths across Himachal Pradesh.

A total of 11,706 vaccination teams have been deployed to ensure the smooth conduct of the campaign. Mop-up rounds will be held on December 22 and 23, during which health workers will go door-to-door to vaccinate children who may have been missed, particularly in migrant families and high-risk areas. The Chief Minister said all necessary vaccines, cold-chain equipment and logistics had already been supplied to all districts.

Addressing the gathering, Sukhu said the state government was strengthening healthcare services at all levels, from primary health centres to medical colleges. He announced that an Advanced Paediatric Centre would be established at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialties, Chamiyana.

“The centre will provide world-class treatment facilities for children and significantly enhance specialised paediatric care in the state,” the Chief Minister said.

Sukhu also announced the introduction of special OPD consultation slots for senior citizens above 70 years of age to ensure they receive timely medical attention without long waiting periods.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to education and health, the Chief Minister said both sectors were being accorded top priority. He added that modern technology and upgraded infrastructure were being introduced to further strengthen health services, and vacant posts in the Health Department were being filled in a phased manner to improve service delivery.

Highlighting technological advancements, Sukhu said robotic surgery had been introduced at Chamiyana and Tanda hospitals. “Old and outdated machines are being replaced in medical colleges and civil hospitals. The government is investing nearly Rs 3,000 crore in installing MRI, CT scan and X-ray machines across the state,” he said.

He added that health facilities in Himachal Pradesh were being upgraded on the lines of AIIMS, Delhi, and that modern trauma centres equipped with advanced facilities had been established to provide better and faster care to patients.

The Chief Minister appreciated the efforts of doctors, anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, ANMs, Panchayati Raj institutions, school teachers and district administrations for the successful organisation of the Pulse Polio Campaign.
