An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck Myanmar on Thursday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The tremor occurred at a depth of 100 km. In a post on X, the NCS said: “EQ of M: 4.4, On: 18/12/2025 06:04:36 IST, Lat: 26.07 N, Long: 97.00 E, Depth: 100 Km, Location: Myanmar.”

The latest quake follows a series of mild to moderate seismic events in the region over the past week. On December 13, an earthquake of magnitude 3.9 was recorded at a depth of 115 km, while a magnitude 3.8 tremor struck the country on December 11. Earlier, on December 10, a stronger quake of magnitude 4.6 occurred at a depth of 138 km, according to NCS data.

Myanmar is highly vulnerable to seismic activity due to its complex tectonic setting. The country lies at the intersection of four major tectonic plates — the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda and Burma plates — which interact through active geological processes. A 1,400-kilometre-long transform fault, known as the Sagaing Fault, runs through the country, linking the Andaman spreading centre in the south to a collision zone in the north.

The Sagaing Fault significantly increases earthquake risk for major population centres including Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago and Yangon, which together account for nearly 46 per cent of Myanmar’s population. Although Yangon lies some distance from the fault trace, its dense population makes it particularly vulnerable. Historical records show that a powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Bago in 1903 also caused strong tremors in Yangon.

Following the devastating magnitude 7.7 and 6.4 earthquakes that struck central Myanmar on March 28 earlier this year, the World Health Organisation had warned of rising health risks among displaced populations. These included threats from tuberculosis, HIV, and vector- and water-borne diseases in quake-affected areas.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the latest tremor.
