The son of Hollywood actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner has been taken into custody on suspicion of murdering his parents after they were found dead at their Los Angeles home over the weekend, police said on Monday.

Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested late Sunday and booked on suspicion of murder, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He remains in custody without bail. Homicide detectives are scheduled to present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday to determine whether formal charges will be filed.

Rob Reiner, 78, renowned for directing acclaimed films such as When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride and Stand by Me, and his wife Michele Reiner, 70, were found dead at their residence in the upscale Brentwood neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon. Police later confirmed that the couple were victims of homicide and alleged that their son was responsible for their deaths.

According to media reports, the couple’s daughter discovered the bodies. Local outlets also reported that Nick Reiner had been seen arguing with his parents at a holiday gathering on Saturday night.

Nick Reiner had previously spoken publicly about his long struggle with substance abuse and periods of homelessness. In a 2016 interview, he said he first entered rehabilitation at the age of 15 and underwent treatment multiple times over the years. His experiences inspired the 2016 film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote with his father.

Tributes poured in following the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described Rob Reiner as someone who “improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy for social and economic justice.”

Rob Reiner rose to fame as an actor in the 1970s television series All in the Family, earning two Emmy Awards for his role as Mike “Meathead” Stivic. He later enjoyed a prolific directing career, beginning with the cult classic This Is Spinal Tap and continuing with a string of critically acclaimed films spanning several decades.

Michele Reiner was a professional photographer and was known for having taken the photograph of Donald Trump that appeared on the cover of his book Trump: The Art of the Deal. The couple had three children together.
