MLA Anuradha Rana on Monday inaugurated the newly established Sissu Police Station in Lahaul and Spiti district after performing traditional rituals and prayers. Lahaul and Spiti Superintendent of Police Shivani Mehla and other senior officials were present on the occasion.

Addressing a public gathering, the MLA said that tourist inflow to the district had increased substantially since the opening of the Atal Tunnel. Areas such as Koksar, the north portal of the tunnel, and Sissu have witnessed a sharp rise in visitor numbers, leading to mounting challenges related to traffic regulation, law and order, and monitoring of commercial activities. Until now, Sissu was served only by a police outpost, which put considerable strain on the local police administration. The establishment of a full-fledged police station, she said, would significantly strengthen policing and traffic management in the region.

Rana said the issue was taken up with the state government, following which approval was granted for the Sissu Police Station. With its commissioning, 45 police personnel will now be posted at Sissu, compared to just six earlier at the outpost. She expressed special gratitude to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for sanctioning the police station.

The MLA noted that residents of five panchayats—Koksar, Sissu, Mooling, Gondhla and Khangsar—will now no longer need to travel to Keylong for police-related work, as all essential services will be available locally. She added that in the event of accidents or natural disasters, response and relief operations would now be faster and more effective.

Providing further details, Rana said the existing building had been renovated for immediate use. Land has also been identified for the construction of a new police station building along with residential quarters for police personnel, which will soon be transferred to the department. Construction work is expected to begin shortly.

She urged both the public and the police to remain vigilant and take strict action against drug trafficking to safeguard the youth from substance abuse. Emphasising the need for a safe and drug-free society, she assured residents that any shortcomings in infrastructure or facilities at the police station would be addressed promptly.

On the occasion, SP Shivani Mehla welcomed the chief guest and honoured her with a traditional cap, khadak and shawl. District Council president Veena Devi, District Council member Nirmala, former District Congress president Gyalchhan Thakur, BDC member Tashi Kesang, Sissu Panchayat pradhan Rajeev, Khangsar pradhan Suresh, Gondhla pradhan Suraj Thakur, chief medical officer Dr Roshan Lal, assistant engineer Anju Devi, Sanjay Bodh, members of local Mahila Mandals, eminent citizens and police officials were also present.
