Hongkong News : Jimmy Lai Convicted in Landmark Hong Kong National Security Trial
Pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai has been convicted under Hong Kong’s national security law in a landmark trial that could see him jailed for life.
Former Hong Kong media tycoon and prominent pro-democracy figure Jimmy Lai was convicted on Monday in a landmark national security trial, a verdict that could see him spend the rest of his life in prison.
A panel of three government-approved judges found the 78-year-old guilty of conspiring to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security, as well as conspiracy to publish seditious articles. Lai had pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Lai was arrested in August 2020 under the sweeping national security law imposed by Beijing following the massive pro-democracy protests of 2019. Over nearly five years in detention, he has already served sentences for several lesser offences and appeared visibly frail during court proceedings.
His wife and son attended the verdict hearing, along with Hong Kong’s Roman Catholic Cardinal Joseph Zen. Before being led out of the courtroom by guards, Lai nodded quietly toward his family.
The high-profile trial, which was conducted without a jury, has drawn close attention from the United States, Britain, the European Union and international rights groups. Observers view the case as a key test of press freedom and judicial independence in Hong Kong, which was handed back to China by Britain in 1997.
The verdict also carries diplomatic implications. US President Donald Trump has said he raised Lai’s case with Chinese leaders, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that securing Lai’s release is a priority for his government. Lai holds British citizenship.
Lai, the founder of the now-defunct pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, was convicted on two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and one count of conspiracy to distribute seditious publications. Under Hong Kong’s national security law, the collusion offence carries a possible sentence ranging from three years to life imprisonment, depending on the severity of the crime and the defendant’s role. The sedition charge carries a maximum sentence of two years.
A four-day mitigation hearing is scheduled to begin on January 12, during which Lai’s legal team will argue for a reduced sentence.
Apple Daily was known for its sharp criticism of the Hong Kong government and the Chinese Communist Party. The newspaper was forced to shut down in 2021 after police raided its newsroom, arrested senior editors and froze the company’s assets.
During the 156-day trial, prosecutors alleged that Lai conspired with senior Apple Daily executives and others to urge foreign governments to impose sanctions, blockades or other hostile measures against Hong Kong or China.
