The ‘Chitta-free Himachal’ campaign has gained fresh momentum with the Himachal Pradesh Police carrying out a special, intensive statewide operation to curb drug abuse. As part of the coordinated drive, nine cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act across multiple districts.

The operation was conducted simultaneously at identified vulnerable locations throughout the state, reflecting the government’s intensified focus on tackling substance abuse. Police teams inspected 254 deserted and semi-public sites and checked 596 vehicles across districts including Solan, Kinnaur, Sirmaur, Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh, Mandi, Kullu, Lahaul and Spiti, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Kangra, Nurpur, Dehra, Chamba and Una.

During the drive, 301 individuals were checked and counselled as part of preventive and corrective measures aimed at discouraging drug use. In accordance with legal procedures, blood and urine samples of nine individuals were collected for examination. Persons found at isolated or deserted locations were counselled, formally documented and, where necessary, handed over to their family members after due verification, police officials said.

Director General of Police Ashok Tewari said the operation involved extensive inspections and thorough searches at secluded hill slopes, forest patches, abandoned buildings, vacant rooms, parking areas, river banks, old bus stands, garage sheds and other locations often misused for drug-related activities. He described the drive as systematic and intelligence-led, supported by strong inter-district coordination to ensure effective and lawful enforcement.

The DGP said the operation was part of the statewide anti-chitta campaign launched on November 15, 2025, by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, with the goal of realising the vision of a “Chitta-free Himachal”. The core objective, he added, is to prevent young people from slipping into drug addiction and to dismantle group-based substance abuse networks that often take root in secluded locations.
