The Education Department has decided to provide ₹16,000 each to meritorious Class X and Class XII students from government schools—covering the last three academic years—to help them purchase a tablet under a state government scheme.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu will launch the initiative on Monday by handing over ₹16,000 vouchers to a group of selected toppers during the government’s Jan Sankalp rally in Mandi. “In total, nearly 10,000 meritorious students from the past three years will receive these vouchers. Each year, about 3,300 students will benefit. The Chief Minister will symbolically begin the distribution at the Mandi event,” said Ashish Kohli, Director of School Education.

Kohli added that vouchers for the remaining students would be sent to the respective Deputy Directors, who will oversee distribution at the school level. Eligible students from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities will also receive the ₹16,000 benefit.

Students will be able to redeem the vouchers through vendors empanelled by the government for supplying tablets. “If a student wishes to buy a higher-end device, they can pay the additional amount themselves,” Kohli noted.

He said the tablets will significantly support students’ academic growth, especially as digital learning becomes increasingly central to education. “Most government school students cannot afford such devices. These tablets will not only assist in regular studies but will also help meritorious students prepare for competitive examinations,” he said.
