NCW Member Mamta Kumari Urges Himachal Women to Speak Up Against Domestic Abuse
NCW Member Mamta Kumari, during the ‘Commission at Your Doorstep’ programme in Himachal, urged women to show courage against domestic violence. She reviewed 30 cases, sought district-level nodal officers, pushed for counselling centres, and inspected welfare institutions in Dharamsala.
National Commission for Women (NCW) Member Mamta Kumari on Tuesday urged women in Himachal Pradesh to demonstrate stronger resolve in standing up against domestic violence and abuse. She was interacting with local women and later chaired a meeting with civil and police officials under the NCW’s “Commission at Your Doorstep” initiative.
Kumari recommended that the state government appoint district-level nodal officers to ensure timely handling of cases involving domestic violence and women’s safety. During the hearing, 25 registered complaints and five new cases were examined. She reviewed each matter individually and directed the concerned departments to take swift, effective action. She noted that district-level hearings help expedite resolutions, especially for women who are unable to approach the Commission’s office in Delhi. Domestic violence, she added, accounts for nearly 70% of complaints received by the NCW.
She also announced that the Commission is setting up “Tere Mere Sapne” counselling centres for pre-marital counselling in collaboration with district administrations. Over 100 such centres are already operational nationwide, and one will soon come up in Kangra district.
Kumari instructed officials to appoint district-level nodal officers and to introduce skill development initiatives for women residing in nari niketans. She further directed that regular motivational sessions and counselling be organised for inmates. She asked the police to give priority to women’s complaints and to avoid calling women to police stations after 5 pm. She emphasised that while the NCW stands firmly with women in genuine cases, the law should not be misused.
She added that the Commission is promoting women’s participation in public life through its “Panchayat to Parliament” programme, which aims to strengthen grassroots leadership among women.
On Monday, Kumari inspected several institutions in Dharamsala to assess women’s safety mechanisms and welfare facilities. She visited the One Stop Centre, Lala Lajpat Rai Rehabilitation Home, and the Zonal Hospital, reviewing infrastructure, support services and operational procedures. She directed officials to enhance service delivery and ensure better protection for women.
Kumari also inspected the Old Age Home at Dadhi, where she interacted with elderly residents, listened to their concerns, and reviewed the care arrangements. She suggested measures to improve facilities and enhance overall comfort for the residents.
