Himachal to Invest ₹5 Crore Each for Bone Marrow Units in Major Hospitals, Announces CM Sukhu
Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announces ₹5 crore each for bone marrow units in key medical colleges, major upgrades in diagnostic infrastructure, enhanced PG stipends, and new incentive policies for doctors.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday announced that the state government will allocate ₹5 crore each for developing bone marrow transplant infrastructure across major hospitals in Himachal Pradesh. The funding will support facilities at IGMC Shimla, AIIMS Bilaspur, Chamiyana Hospital, Tanda Medical College, Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College (Ner Chowk, Mandi), and Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur.
He also said the government will soon introduce an “incentive policy” for doctors, designed around multiple performance parameters. As part of the upcoming Budget, the monthly stipend for postgraduate resident doctors will be increased to ₹50,000 in the first year, ₹60,000 in the second year, and ₹65,000 in the third year. In addition, ₹5 lakh has been sanctioned for the Central Students’ Union to organise its cultural programme.
Addressing the annual function Stimulus 2025-26 organised by the Central Students’ Union of IGMC Shimla, Sukhu praised the students for their achievements. He said IGMC students consistently excel across disciplines and have brought national and international recognition to the state.
The Chief Minister further announced ₹5 crore for new laparoscopic facilities and 6 crore for the Department of Anaesthesia at the IGMC. He directed officials to expedite the land transfer needed for constructing a new student hostel and asked the college Principal to complete the process of shifting the gynaecology wing from Kamla Nehru Hospital to IGMC.
Sukhu emphasised that the government’s goal is to bring world-class diagnostic and treatment facilities to Himachal Pradesh, ensuring timely and advanced care for patients. He said five medical colleges in the state will soon be equipped with cutting-edge medical technology.
He added that the government has committed over ₹3,000 crore to upgrade healthcare infrastructure and expand modern medical services. As part of this initiative, outdated medical equipment in use for more than two decades will be replaced with advanced machinery comparable to that at AIIMS Delhi and PGI Chandigarh.
To strengthen medical education, Sukhu announced a significant expansion in training seats: B.Sc Medical Laboratory, Radiology and Imaging, Anaesthesia, and OT Technology courses at IGMC will see an increase from 10 seats to 50, while Tanda Medical College will expand from 18 to 50 seats.
