Himachal Assembly Shows Rare Unity as Congress and BJP Join Hands Against Chitta Crisis
In a rare bipartisan show, Congress and BJP legislators in Himachal Pradesh jointly protested on Assembly premises against the rising threat of chitta. CM Sukhu and LoP Jai Ram Thakur called for united action, stronger enforcement and community-driven prevention.
In a rare show of political unity, the Congress Legislature Party led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and BJP legislators headed by Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur jointly staged a protest on the Himachal Pradesh Assembly premises on Friday, urging a collective fight against the rising menace of chitta.
Chief Minister Sukhu, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri and the Leader of the Opposition, said the rapidly growing drug crisis called for a response that transcended party politics. “This is not about politics. Lives are at stake, and we must work together,” Sukhu said. He added that the government was finalising a comprehensive action plan that includes gram sabha meetings in every panchayat and rewards for those providing credible information on drug networks.
Deputy Chief Minister Agnihotri noted that anti-drug rallies had already been held in Shimla and Dharamsala, emphasising the importance of coordinated efforts between the government and the Opposition. “I will speak to the Leader of the Opposition immediately. We must move together on this issue,” he said.
Sukhu further stated that the state was balancing strict enforcement with rehabilitation. “Large-scale arrests are being carried out, properties of offenders are being attached, and rehabilitation remains a priority. Enforcement and recovery will go hand in hand,” he said.
