Four people were killed and a total of 14 were shot during a family gathering in Stockton, Northern California, on Saturday night, police said.
Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee wrote in a Facebook post that the shooting took place at a child’s birthday party. “I am in contact with staff and public safety officials to fully understand what happened, and I will continue to demand answers,” he added.
Police said they received reports of gunfire shortly before 6:00 p.m. local time (0200 GMT) near the 1900 block of Lucille Avenue.
In a post on X, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed: “We can confirm at this time that approximately 14 people were struck by gunfire, and four victims have been pronounced deceased.”
“This remains a very active and ongoing investigation, and information is still limited. Early indications suggest this may have been a targeted incident, and investigators are exploring all possibilities,” the statement said.
Authorities have not released any details about the shooter.
