Protests Inside and Outside Assembly: Congress Targets Centre Over Disaster Relief Funds

BJP legislators protested against the state government.

On the third day of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly’s Winter Session, both Congress and BJP legislators staged coordinated protests inside and outside the House, leading to repeated disruptions.

Before the session began, Congress MLAs demonstrated at the Assembly gate, accusing the Central government of withholding financial assistance to the hill state. They claimed that despite announcing a ₹1,500 crore disaster relief package, the Centre had not released the funds. Members of the ruling party said the Centre’s refusal to provide financial support amounted to an attack on the state’s rights.

Inside the House, the opposition BJP intensified protests during Question Hour, raising slogans and demanding a discussion on issues affecting government, semi-government, and retired employees. Leader of the Opposition Jairam Thakur pressed for an immediate debate on employee grievances. Although Speaker Kuldeep Pathania assured them that time would be allotted later, BJP MLAs entered the Well of the House, forcing a disruption. With the uproar continuing, the Speaker adjourned the Assembly for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, BJP MLAs held a separate protest outside the Assembly, accusing the Sukhvinder Sukhu government of being “anti-employee.” They alleged delays in releasing gratuity payments to retired staff, irregular disbursement of medical allowances, and negligence toward other employee-related issues.
