Machine Operator Swept Away After Water Release From Pandoh Dam Triggers Sudden Surge in Beas River
A machine operator working on the Mandi–Pathankot four-lane project was swept away in the Beas River after Pandoh Dam released water despite prior warnings. Rescue efforts are ongoing, and a case has been filed over alleged negligence.
A machine operator working on the Mandi–Pathankot four-lane project was swept away by the rising waters of the Beas River after the Pandoh Dam released water late Wednesday night.
The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) had issued an advance alert, warning that water levels would rise. Despite this, the construction company reportedly continued operating heavy machinery along the riverbank late into the night. The warning proved critical when a sudden surge in the river’s flow trapped one of the machines, pulling its operator into the water.
According to Varun Chari, Project Director, NHAI Mandi, contractors had been informed beforehand about the scheduled discharge from the Pandoh Dam. The operator, Tanveer Alam from Bihar, was attempting to move the machinery to a safer area when the intensified current swept him away.
Rescue teams launched a search operation immediately, but he could not be located overnight. The search continued along the riverbanks on Thursday, though the operator remains missing.
The incident took place near Bindravani, where the company is constructing a four-lane bridge. Heavy equipment had been placed on the riverbed to excavate foundations for the bridge pillars. Officials have raised serious concerns over the negligence shown despite clear warnings, highlighting ongoing safety lapses at major riverside infrastructure sites.
Mandi SP Sakshi Verma confirmed that a case has been registered and that an investigation is underway.
