5.7-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Bangladesh; Tremors Felt Across Eastern India
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit Bangladesh near Narsingdi, with tremors felt across eastern India. Buildings shook in Dhaka, sending residents outdoors, though no major damage was initially reported.
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake originated at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles).
Officials said tremors were also felt in India’s eastern states bordering Bangladesh, though there were no immediate reports of damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the epicenter was near Narsingdi, roughly 40 km (25 miles) from the capital, Dhaka.
Witnesses told Reuters that frightened residents rushed out of their homes as buildings shook, and some makeshift structures collapsed in parts of Dhaka.
