US, UK and Australia Sanction Russia-Based Media Land for Enabling Global Ransomware Operations
The US, UK and Australia have jointly imposed sanctions on Russia-based hosting provider Media Land for allegedly enabling ransomware attacks. The U.S. Treasury’s OFAC also targeted the company’s leadership and affiliates as part of a broader push to disrupt cybercriminal infrastructure.
The United States, the United Kingdom and Australia on Wednesday announced coordinated sanctions against Media Land, a Russia-based “bulletproof” hosting provider accused of supporting extensive ransomware activity.
According to a statement from the U.S. Treasury Department, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has also sanctioned three members of Media Land’s leadership team, along with three affiliated companies.
“Bulletproof hosting providers like Media Land supply the essential infrastructure that enables cybercriminals to launch attacks on businesses across the United States and its allied nations,” said Brian Nelson, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the Treasury Department.
The joint action underscores growing international efforts to target the service providers and infrastructure that allow ransomware networks to operate with near impunity.
