Kashmir Police Station Blast Kills Nine; Forensic Team Among Victims
A powerful explosion at a police station in India-administered Kashmir killed at least nine people and injured 29, according to police sources. Most of the victims were police personnel, including forensic officers examining seized explosives. The blast comes just days after a deadly car explosion in New Delhi.
At least nine people were killed and 29 injured after a stockpile of seized explosives detonated late Friday inside a police station in India-administered Kashmir, police sources said. The incident occurred just days after a car explosion in New Delhi that left eight people dead.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the sources said most of those killed were police personnel, including forensic officers who had been inspecting the explosives. Several of the injured are in critical condition.
“The bodies are being identified, as some are completely charred,” one source said.
The blast was so powerful, the source added, that body parts were found in nearby homes located 100–200 meters from the station.
The police chief of Jammu and Kashmir is expected to address a press conference on the incident shortly.
Earlier, a local police officer told Reuters that an explosion had occurred at the Nowgam police station, sparking a fire in the premises. Fire engines were dispatched to the site.
The incident comes four days after a deadly car blast in the Indian capital, which the government has described as a terrorist attack.
India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed neighbors, have fought multiple wars over the disputed Kashmir region, which both claim in full but control only in part.
