A workshop was organized on Tuesday at the Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, under the Yashoda AI initiative of the National Commission for Women (NCW), aimed at bridging the gap between technology and legal education.

The session marked a vital step toward sensitizing future lawyers, judges, and policymakers to the transformative — and at times disruptive — role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the justice system and broader society.

With courts exploring algorithmic tools, the rise of deepfakes influencing public opinion, and online harassment emerging as a legal challenge, understanding AI is no longer optional for law students.

The workshop covered several key areas:

  • AI and Law: How AI is reshaping judicial systems, case prediction, evidence assessment, due process, and cyber law.
  • Women’s Safety in the Digital Sphere: Understanding digital rights, online abuse, and gendered cyber threats.
  • Ethical AI Use: Addressing bias, data misuse, and algorithmic discrimination.
  • Practical Tools: Training on platforms like ChatGPT, Cyber Dost, and emerging legal technologies.

Speaking at the event, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar said,

“AI and law must evolve together to protect citizens in the digital era. By equipping young legal minds with digital literacy, we are investing in a more just and informed India.”

She added,

“As we move toward a developed India, it’s essential to recognize that our greatest strength lies in our youth — the thinkers, creators, and innovators who will shape our digital future.”

Future Shift Labs (FSL) founder Nitin Narang emphasized that law students are not merely learners but guardians of digital justice.

“Through Yashodha AI, we aim to foster critical thinking about ethics, rights, and responsibilities in an AI-driven world,” he said.

Astha Naresh Kohli, Advocate at the Himachal Pradesh High Court and FSL Advisor, who conducted the legal session, described Yashodha AI as “a remarkable step toward embracing AI with an open mind.”

“This NCW–FSL initiative is truly commendable. Engaging with students on cybersecurity and legal perspectives was an enriching experience,” she added.
