World Athletics revealed on Thursday that two employees and a contracted consultant stole more than €1.5 million ($1.75 million) from the organization over several years, a fraud uncovered during a financial audit, according to the sport’s governing body.

The organization said the theft came to light during its first annual audit under new financial leadership, prompting an internal investigation that led to contract terminations and criminal referrals.

While one employee left before their involvement was discovered, World Athletics said the other staff member and the consultant were dismissed following the inquiry.

“Detailed case files have been prepared and referred to the relevant judicial and legal authorities for criminal investigation,” the federation said in a statement. “World Athletics also commissioned an independent forensic accounting review to support its internal probe, which found no evidence of any further fraudulent activity.

“Enhanced internal financial controls are now being implemented across the organization.”

According to the federation’s annual report released last month, World Athletics’ year-on-year revenue reached $59.8 million, up 10.5% from the previous year.

President Sebastian Coe said the body is fully committed to recovering the stolen funds “using the full force of the law.”

“Many organizations might sweep such incidents under the rug, quietly dismissing those involved and allowing them to carry their scams elsewhere,” Coe said. “That’s not who we are.

“We’ve built a strong reputation for good governance, transparency, and standing up for what’s right — even when it’s uncomfortable. It may be awkward, but doing the right thing is essential.”
