China and India Hold ‘Active’ Talks on Border Management

China and India’s militaries have held talks on managing their shared border, with both sides agreeing to use existing mechanisms to address any “on-ground issues,” the two neighbors said on Wednesday.

New Delhi and Beijing reached a major agreement last year to ease military tensions along their Himalayan frontier, which had escalated after a deadly 2020 clash that left 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers dead.

Since the 2024 accord, both countries have taken steps to improve relations — including resuming direct flights and boosting trade and investment flows.

China’s Defense Ministry said the latest round of high-level military talks, held on Saturday on the Indian side of a designated meeting point, resulted in both sides agreeing to continue communication through military and diplomatic channels.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated, “Both sides agreed to continue using existing mechanisms to address any on-ground issues in order to maintain stability along the border.”

In August, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China for the first time in seven years to attend a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) regional security summit. During their meeting, Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed that India and China are partners in development, not rivals, and discussed ways to strengthen trade ties amid global tariff uncertainties.
