With a frail frame bent by years of hard work in the fields, 82-year-old Mahinder Kaur of Bahadurgarh Jandian village walks slowly but firmly — unwavering in her resolve to continue the defamation case against Bollywood actress and BJP MP from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut.

On Friday, Kangana appeared before a Bathinda court, where she apologized for her 2020–21 tweet during the farmers’ protest and was granted bail upon furnishing a ₹50,000 bond.

Speaking softly yet with quiet determination, Mahinder said,

“She (Kangana) never met me. I will not forgive her. She is a famous actress and now a political leader, while I am just a small farmer. Yet, she forced me to come to court at this age. She should understand how much burden her visits put on the government exchequer and how much inconvenience it causes the public. She says her words were misinterpreted, but that’s not true.”

Due to ill health, Mahinder could not appear in court and was represented by her husband, Labh Singh, who attended the proceedings.

The elderly couple lives with their son, Gurdas, in an old, unplastered house near the village bus stop. The family owns about 13 acres of farmland and keeps a few milch animals to sustain their livelihood. Despite her age and declining health, Mahinder still manages most household chores herself — her daughter-in-law passed away last year.

Their son Gurdas, who suffers from a serious illness and uses a urine bag, said,

“My mother has worked in the fields all her life, but now she’s grown weak. My father is old too. I help as much as I can.”

The family has hired a labourer to assist with farm work.

“We have to fight this battle,” said Labh Singh quietly. “She (Kangana) has apologized in court, but only God knows what happens next. God gives us strength — otherwise, we are nothing.”

For this modest farming family, the case is not about fame or politics.
It is a fight for dignity.
