Centre Approves ₹1,734 Crore Shimla Ropeway Project: Deputy Chief Minister
6.19 hectares of forest land cleared for major infrastructure development
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri announced on Thursday that the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted Stage-I clearance under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, for the Shimla Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Project.
He said the ₹1,734.70 crore project marks a major step toward improving urban mobility in the state capital through the development of a 13.79-kilometre-long ropeway connecting key locations across Shimla.
“This initiative will help ease traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and promote clean and sustainable urban transport for both residents and tourists,” Agnihotri stated.
He added that in-principle approval has been granted for the use of 6.1909 hectares of forest land, in full compliance with all environmental and legal norms. The project, he said, would create employment opportunities for locals and offer visitors a new, enjoyable travel experience.
Expressing gratitude to the Central Government and the Environment Ministry for approving the project, the Deputy Chief Minister emphasized that environmental protection will remain a top priority, and all construction activities will strictly adhere to forest department guidelines.
