Trump to Visit Malaysia on October 26, Says Malaysian Foreign Minister

Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said on Tuesday that U.S. President Donald Trump will visit Malaysia on October 26 and is “keen” to help broker a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.

Mohamad said Malaysia and the United States will work together to facilitate the peace process between Thailand and Cambodia, under which both sides would be required to remove all landmines and heavy artillery from their shared border.

He expressed hope that the ceasefire agreement would be signed during the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders’ summit, scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 to 28.

“During the summit, we expect the signing of what will be called the Kuala Lumpur Accord — a declaration aimed at ensuring peace and a lasting ceasefire between the two neighboring nations,” Mohamad told reporters.

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia over undemarcated sections of their 817-kilometer (508-mile) land border flared into a deadly five-day clash in July.

The fighting — the most intense in more than a decade — left at least 48 people dead and displaced tens of thousands on both sides.
