Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi arrived in Shimla on Sunday afternoon. She is scheduled to attend the unveiling ceremony of former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh’s statue at the historic Ridge’s Daulat Singh Park on Monday.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, and Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh—son of the late leader—welcomed Gandhi upon her arrival at Annadale Ground, along with other dignitaries.

Earlier, a government statement said that Chief Minister Sukhu inspected the preparations for the unveiling ceremony and issued necessary directions to ensure security and smooth conduct of the event.

The ceremony is expected to be attended by Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Deputy Chief Minister Agnihotri, state party in-charge Rajni Patil, and Himachal Pradesh Congress President Pratibha Singh, among others.

Virbhadra Singh, who served as Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister six times, first assumed office on April 8, 1983, and held the position for nearly 23 years and 300 days in total. The statue was initially scheduled to be unveiled on his birth anniversary, June 23, but the event was postponed due to the unavailability of central leaders.

The invitation for the ceremony has been extended by Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, who also chairs the Raja Virbhadra Singh Foundation, the organizing body of the event.

The statue will be installed near that of Himachal Pradesh’s first Chief Minister, Dr. Y.S. Parmar, alongside statues of other eminent leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the Ridge.
