Manali-Leh Highway and Several Key Roads Closed

Unseasonal snowfall in the Lahaul Valley of Lahaul-Spiti district has caused significant concern among apple growers, as heavy snow has snapped branches laden with ripening fruit. The region’s apple crop, which was nearly ready for harvest, now faces a major risk of damage.

The snowfall, which began on Sunday, continued through Monday, affecting both high-altitude and lower areas. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the district is under a heavy rain and snowfall warning from October 5 to 7.

Light snowfall was also reported in Keylong, the district headquarters, bringing a sharp drop in temperature and triggering a cold wave across the valley.

In view of the deteriorating weather and to prevent any untoward incidents, the Lahaul-Spiti district administration has closed several key routes until further notice. In a public advisory issued by Superintendent of Police Shivani Mehla, the following roads have been officially shut:

  • Koksar to Losar (NH-505): Closed due to heavy snowfall
  • Darcha to Sarchu (NH-003, Manali-Leh Highway): Closed; police checkpoints will manage traffic
  • Darcha to Shinkula Road: Closed due to snow accumulation

The administration has also issued safety guidelines for tourists and residents, advising them to avoid unnecessary travel, verify road and weather conditions before setting out, park vehicles in safe areas away from slopes and rivers, and avoid crossing waterlogged or flooded zones. Hotel and homestay operators have been instructed to guide guests and ensure their safety.

Apple growers are particularly worried as the snowfall struck just before the harvest season. The weight of the snow has damaged tree branches, posing not only an immediate threat to the crop but also potential long-term harm to the orchards.

The cold spell has also affected the higher reaches of Mandi and Kullu districts, where light snowfall was reported, while lower areas experienced rainfall.

In case of emergencies, residents can contact the District Disaster Management Centre, Lahaul-Spiti, at 94594-61355, or at 01900-202509 / 510 / 517, and the toll-free number 107.
Officials said they are closely monitoring the situation and will issue updates as conditions evolve.
