China on Tuesday urged the European Union not to “challenge” a 1971 United Nations resolution that transferred China’s seat at the UN from Taipei to Beijing, expressing anger over recent EU remarks suggesting that the resolution did not explicitly address Taiwan’s status.

Beijing and Taipei — which China claims as part of its territory — have been locked in an intensifying war of words over UN Resolution 2758, the measure that recognized the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as the legitimate representative of China at the UN.

China, which has not ruled out using force to bring Taiwan under its control, insists that the resolution provides international legal backing for its claim to the island. Last week, Beijing’s foreign ministry issued a lengthy statement reiterating this stance — a move swiftly condemned by Taipei.

In response to Reuters’ queries, the European Union said that the resolution merely addressed representation and did not mention Taiwan at all. Beijing countered that the EU’s interpretation amounted to a “distortion” of the resolution.

“We urge the EU to strictly abide by the one-China principle and its own commitments on the Taiwan question, to refrain from challenging UN Resolution 2758, and to avoid sending any wrong signals to separatist forces seeking Taiwan’s independence,” China’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Under the “One China” principle, Beijing demands that all countries recognize there is only one China and that Taiwan is an inseparable part of it.

An EU spokesperson, in an emailed statement, noted, “UN Resolution 2758 is very short — only 150 words — and nowhere in those 150 words is the term ‘Taiwan’ mentioned.” The spokesperson added, “The resolution changed representation at the United Nations from ‘the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek’ to ‘the representatives of the Government of the People’s Republic of China.’”

Beijing, in turn, said it was “deeply dissatisfied” with and “strongly opposed” to the EU’s comments.

The EU spokesperson further emphasized that “as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has a special responsibility to uphold the rules-based international order, the UN Charter, and international law — including the prohibition of the use of force and the maintenance of international peace and security.”

Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), represented China at the UN until 1971, when Resolution 2758 was adopted. The ROC government had fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing the Chinese civil war to Mao Zedong’s Communists.

The U.S. State Department also weighed in last week, accusing China of “deliberately misrepresenting” the resolution as part of its broader campaign to isolate Taiwan from the international community.

While no EU member state maintains formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan — whose government rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims — the island has been seeking greater support from Europe. Taiwan’s foreign minister made two visits to the continent last month to deepen engagement with European partners.
