Himachal Pradesh is considering a partnership with New Zealand to strengthen apple and pear cultivation in the state. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met with a New Zealand delegation led by High Commissioner Patrick John Rata to discuss possible collaboration in horticulture.

The Chief Minister said Himachal could benefit from New Zealand’s advanced horticultural practices, technology transfer, and farmer capacity-building programs.

“Such cooperation will help improve productivity, strengthen post-harvest management, and align produce with international quality standards, enhancing the global competitiveness of Himachal’s fruit,” Sukhu noted.

He emphasized that New Zealand’s experts could provide valuable technical guidance in areas such as high-density planting, orchard management, pest and disease control, storage, and marketing strategies. “This initiative will not only boost yield and quality but also support Himachal’s horticulture-driven economy,” he added.

Sukhu reiterated his government’s commitment to increasing the income of apple growers, highlighting several measures taken over the past two and a half years in that direction.

“With New Zealand’s expertise, the state aims to adopt modern, sustainable, and climate-resilient practices, ushering in a new era for apple and pear cultivation,” he said.

Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi also contributed valuable suggestions during the meeting.
