U.S. President Donald Trump began his second historic state visit to the United Kingdom on Wednesday amid unprecedented pomp, tight security, technological displays, and protests. King Charles and other members of the royal family welcomed one of their closest allies with full ceremonial grandeur.

Trump and First Lady Melania were greeted at Windsor Castle — the world’s oldest and largest inhabited castle, serving as a royal residence for nearly a millennium. The visit features a full range of British pageantry, from carriage processions to lavish banquets.

The UK described this as the largest military ceremonial welcome ever for a state visit. A devoted admirer of the monarchy, Trump expressed delight at being the first U.S. leader to be invited twice for such an occasion.

“This is a very special place,” Trump remarked, adding that he holds the UK in high regard.

Aiming to Strengthen the ‘Special Relationship’

Prime Minister Keir Starmer hopes to leverage the visit to deepen the “special relationship” between the two nations, attract billions in investments, discuss tariffs, and press Trump on sensitive geopolitical issues such as Ukraine and Israel.

Tech giants including Microsoft, Nvidia, Google, and OpenAI have pledged £31 billion ($42 billion) in UK investments over the next few years in AI, quantum computing, and civilian nuclear energy.

Following an initial agreement to ease certain tariffs with Trump, Starmer aims for further progress. Talks are expected to address remaining duties on steel, whisky, and salmon.

“They want to see if they can make the trade deal a little better,” Trump said on Tuesday.

While Starmer is counting on royal charm — especially given Trump’s anglophile tendencies and Scottish maternal roots — the UK’s prime minister faces challenges. Polls show Trump remains widely unpopular in the UK, and Starmer himself is grappling with falling approval ratings and economic concerns. He must prove that this royal card can yield real benefits.

Protests and Security Breaches

Questions may also arise about Trump’s ties to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Last week, Starmer dismissed UK ambassador Peter Mandelson over Epstein-related concerns, potentially drawing scrutiny for both leaders. Trump’s own connections to Epstein are under investigation.

Despite heightened security, four people were arrested Tuesday after Epstein-related images of Trump were projected onto a tower at Windsor Castle. Trump was not present at the time.

While crowds of Trump supporters gathered in Windsor, thousands marched in London to protest the state visit.

“I absolutely dislike everything Trump and his administration represent globally,” retired Brian Murray said.

Ceremony Takes Center Stage

On Thursday, Starmer will host Trump at his Chequers residence to focus on geopolitics and trade, but Wednesday was all about spectacle.

Trump and Melania joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, other royals, and dignitaries for a carriage procession flanked by 1,300 British troops. Trump, smiling and conversing with the king, later inspected a troop dressed in red coats and bearskin hats.

The Trump couple toured a royal collection of U.S.-related artifacts before visiting St. George’s Chapel, the resting place of Queen Elizabeth II, where they laid flowers. Trump had been hosted by the late queen during his first state visit in 2019.

The day also featured a military parade and a flypast by the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows aerobatic team, although poor weather prevented both British and U.S. F-35 jets — symbols of defense cooperation — from participating.

Trump and Melania also had a private meeting with King Charles’s eldest son, Prince William, and his wife Kate, described by palace officials as “warm and friendly.”

The day’s events will culminate with a grand state banquet where both the king and president are expected to deliver speeches.

A Visit Marked by Contrasts

For 76-year-old King Charles, the visit may evoke mixed emotions. From his decades-long advocacy for environmental causes to interfaith harmony and unwavering support for Canada — of which he is head of state — his worldview contrasts sharply with Trump’s.

Yet the visit will bring unparalleled global attention to the monarch since his coronation.

“If all goes well… this could be recorded as the defining event of his reign,” said historian Anthony Seldon.
