Paragliding to Resume in Bir-Billing, Himachal from September 16

After hosting the 2024 Paragliding World Cup, Bir has earned the title of “India’s Paragliding Capital.”
Paragliding activities in Bir-Billing are set to resume from September 16, following a two-month break. The ban, imposed at the onset of the monsoon in July, was enforced as a precautionary measure to prevent accidents. According to official sources, after issuing safety guidelines, the district administration will restore flight operations at this globally renowned paragliding destination.
Under the directions of the Baijnath administration, staff are currently clearing the flight site in Billing, which had been overrun by wild grass. Meanwhile, the Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department is repairing the 14-kilometer road connecting Bir and Billing, which was damaged by landslides and uprooted trees during the rainy season.
Speaking to The Tribune, SDM Sankalp Gautam of Baijnath said that subject to approval, solo and tandem flights for tourists could begin as early as Tuesday. On average, around 200 pilots take off daily from Billing and land at the Chogan landing site.
Taxi drivers and local guides have welcomed the decision to restart paragliding activities. Many hotels and homestays, which had been largely deserted during the ban, are expected to reopen and welcome tourists once again.
Bir-Billing is widely regarded as Asia’s top paragliding site and one of the best in the world. This tranquil village, known for eco-tourism, meditation, and spiritual studies, offers a peaceful retreat away from the crowds of larger cities and other tourist hotspots. Located west of Mandi district, the valley has emerged as a global hub for adventure seekers, especially after hosting the prestigious World Cup event.
Billing, the launch site, is perched at an altitude of 8,000 feet above sea level, offering spectacular flight experiences. The landing site is situated on the southern edge of Bir, around 4,500 feet above sea level, making it ideal for safe and scenic landings.
