Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur today expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for surveying the disaster-affected areas of Himachal Pradesh and announcing an immediate financial assistance package of ₹1,500 crore.

Addressing the media, Thakur said, “The Prime Minister not only shared in the pain of the people but also gave them the courage to rebuild their lives. His presence in the state during such a critical time is historic; he is the first Prime Minister to visit Himachal during a natural disaster.”

He further stated that the torrential rains had caused widespread devastation, claiming over 40 lives in a single night, leaving thousands homeless, and destroying large portions of agricultural and horticultural land. He emphasized the urgent need to amend the Forest Conservation Act to facilitate land allotment for the reconstruction of homes, adding that the Prime Minister assured him that the state’s request would be sympathetically considered.

Thakur urged the state government to rise above politics and said, “The Chief Minister and his cabinet must thank the Prime Minister, and the ₹1,500 crore assistance should reach every affected person promptly.” He added that the relief funds must be used strictly for rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in the affected regions. “The government must ensure transparency and accountability,” he said. “The people have already endured immense suffering and cannot afford to face administrative apathy.”

He further stated, “The central government has always stood with Himachal Pradesh and will continue to do so.” Thakur appealed to the state government to work closely with the Centre, ensure legal compliance, and adopt a sustainable development model to reduce disaster risks in the future.
