Shimla International Film Festival Returns, Celebrating Global Cinema and Creative Exchange
The festival opened with Sajjad Soleymani’s Iranian film Ker
With the commencement of the 11th Shimla International Film Festival, cinephiles gathered in large numbers on Sunday at the historic Gaiety Theatre. Nine films from around the world captivated audiences with powerful stories and unique perspectives.
The screenings began with Ker, an Iranian film directed by Sajjad Soleymani, which tells the compelling tale of a young man forced to hide his girlfriend to protect her from danger. Equally engaging was Ru Ba Ru, a Hindi feature by Kapil Tanwar, followed by Laal, directed by Dr. Sumit Sanjay Patil. Another Iranian entry, Parviz Shojai’s Three Monkeys, left viewers spellbound, while Ketal Pal’s The Garland of Ghughuti, Shraddha Pasi Jairath’s As, and Aranya Sahay’s Humans in Loop brought diverse themes to the screen. Representing Himachal Pradesh, Naveen Kumar ‘Chakshu’ showcased The Last Drop, a poignant short film by Rajeev Thakur, presented alongside Dhruv Tara’s work.
Adding charm to the festival, acclaimed Bollywood and Marathi actress Chhaya Kadam shared heartfelt interactions with the audience. Reflecting on her cinematic journey, she emphasized the importance of dedication, passion, and authenticity in acting, inspiring aspiring filmmakers and performers in attendance.
A major highlight of the event was a masterclass led by celebrated Iranian filmmakers Amin Yousefi, Mehrdad Akbari, Mahtab Salimi, and Hamida Rasooli. They offered invaluable insights into scriptwriting, visual effects (VFX), and emerging trends in filmmaking, providing both seasoned enthusiasts and budding directors a rare opportunity to learn from global experts.
Originally scheduled as a three-day event from 5th to 7th September, the festival was rescheduled due to the ongoing monsoon rains and extensive damage across Himachal Pradesh. Nevertheless, its successful return underscored the power of cinema to connect, inspire, and heal.
