Authorities urge proper waste disposal to protect both animals and the environment.

Doctors at a government veterinary hospital in Una, Himachal Pradesh, successfully removed 28 kilograms of plastic, 41 metal nails, and other debris from the stomach of a pregnant cow.

The complex surgery was performed on Saturday at the Regional Veterinary Hospital in Barnoh under the supervision of hospital in-charge Dr. Nishant Ranaut and his team of veterinarians.

Dr. Ranaut stated that after the surgery, the cow will be closely monitored by the veterinary team for seven days to ensure her recovery.

The cow was brought to the hospital by Vipin Kumar from Kalruhi along with other local residents.

“The cow had stopped eating and drinking for the past four to five days,” Dr. Ranaut explained. “During the initial examination, we suspected the presence of unnatural objects in the stomach. Several tests were conducted, and a surgical procedure was recommended.”

The doctors removed 28 kilograms of plastic, cloth, ropes, and various metal fragments—including 41 nails—from the cow’s stomach.

He added, “So far, our hospital has successfully performed 53 complex surgeries, including major diaphragmatic hernia cases. With facilities such as advanced surgeries, blood tests, and ultrasounds, the hospital has emerged as a key treatment center for large animals in the region.”

Dr. Virender Patial, Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department in Una, congratulated the veterinary team for the successful operation and urged the public not to throw plastic waste, nails, or other harmful materials in open spaces.

He further emphasized, “Proper waste disposal is essential to protect both animals and the environment.”
