Shimla, September 6
Pitru Paksha, a significant period dedicated to honoring one’s ancestors, will begin on Sunday, September 7, and continue until September 21. During this time, people will perform rituals such as Shraddh and Pind Daan to pay their respects to departed family members. Special meals will be prepared at homes, and priests along with relatives and guests will be served.

A Symbol of Reverence Toward Ancestors

Acharya Anil Sharma explained that Shraddh is a sacred ritual through which people express their gratitude and devotion to their forefathers. The purpose of the ceremony is to offer peace and satisfaction to the souls of ancestors. He further mentioned that during Pitru Paksha, auspicious ceremonies such as weddings, mundan (first hair-cutting ceremony), and other celebrations are traditionally avoided.

Tradition Rooted in the Epics

Acharya noted that the practice of Shraddh dates back to the Mahabharata era. Bhishma Pitamah is said to have explained the importance of Shraddh to Yudhishthira, after which Pind Daan was performed for the Kauravas who had fallen in the war. Similarly, in the Treta Yuga, Lord Rama and Mother Sita are believed to have offered Shraddh to their father, King Dasharath, on the banks of the Falgu river.

Feeding Crows and Other Animals

According to the Garuda Purana, crows are considered symbolic messengers of Yama, the god of death. Offering food to crows during Shraddh is believed to please Yama and bring peace and liberation to the ancestors’ souls. It is also customary to feed dogs and cows as part of the ritual.

Performing Tarpan at Holy Sites

Acharya Sharma emphasized that performing Pind Daan and Tarpan at sacred sites such as the Ganges holds special significance. However, if one is unable to travel, it is recommended to invite a priest home and carry out the rituals. Feeding relatives and guests afterward is also considered an essential part of the observance.

The Consequences of Skipping Shraddh

Acharya warned that neglecting these rites could result in Pitra Dosh (ancestral affliction), which may lead to conflicts, illness, or obstacles within the family. He further advised that every person should strive to fulfill their spiritual debts—toward the gods, their mother, and their ancestors—during their lifetime.
