Expressing deep concern over the devastation caused by heavy rains and recurring natural disasters, the Himachal Pradesh State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the central government to declare the crisis a national disaster and approve a relief package of at least ₹5,000 crore for the state.

The party has also appealed to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to convene an immediate all-party meeting to address the situation. It called for the formation of a task force, headed by the Chief Secretary, to coordinate relief efforts among administrative officials and departments, and ensure the supply of essential services such as ration, drinking water, electricity, and road connectivity in the affected areas.

The CPM has directed its local units to actively participate in rescue and relief operations and encouraged those in need to reach out to party units for assistance.

In a press statement issued today, CPM State Secretary Sanjay Chauhan said that preliminary estimates show that government departments have suffered losses exceeding ₹3,500 crore, while public and private assets together have been damaged by more than ₹15,000 crore. He added, “So far, 368 people have lost their lives, 41 are missing, over 14,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed, and around 65,000 livestock have died. Agriculture and horticulture have been hit with losses of nearly ₹1,700 crore.”

Chauhan further stated that nearly the entire state has been declared disaster-hit, with roads badly damaged, electricity supply disrupted, and mobile and communication networks down, cutting off several areas. Reports from blocked areas indicate severe shortages of food and other essentials.

Highlighting the serious impact on the apple season, he pointed out that damaged highways and roads have prevented farmers from transporting their produce to markets. “Crops are rotting in fields and along blocked roads,” he added.

Assuring full support to those affected, Chauhan said, “The CPM will stand shoulder to shoulder with the people during this crisis and do everything possible to help them. We call upon all political parties, social groups, and organizations to come together and face this unprecedented disaster collectively.”
