Five Killed in Landslides Across Shimla and Sirmaur

At least five people, including four from Shimla, lost their lives in separate incidents of landslides triggered by incessant heavy rainfall in the state.

In Shimla district’s Mahol Jot village, a massive landslide buried a house under debris, killing Virender Kumar (35) and his 10-year-old daughter on the spot. His wife survived as she was not at home at the time of the incident. Several cattle also perished in the collapse.

In another incident, a woman named Kalawati died after her house caved in due to a landslide in Chol village under Kotkhai tehsil. Similarly, in Bavli village of Jubbal, another woman, Kanishka, was killed when her house collapsed following a landslide. One more casualty was reported in Chauras village of Nohra Dhar tehsil in Sirmaur district.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri expressed grief over the deaths caused by heavy rains in the past 24 hours. They prayed for peace to the departed souls and strength for the bereaved families. The Chief Minister said the state government stands with the affected families in this hour of grief and assured them of all possible assistance. Agnihotri also conveyed his condolences and reiterated that support would be extended to the victims’ families.

Meanwhile, in view of the weather department’s warning of continued heavy rainfall, all educational institutions in Shimla, Solan, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Chamba districts will remain closed on September 2. Classes will be conducted online in these districts.
