Dalai Lama Returns to McLeodganj After Six Weeks in Leh-Ladakh
Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has returned today to his residence at Tsuglagkhang Monastery in McLeodganj after spending nearly six weeks in Leh-Ladakh. His return, initially scheduled for Monday, had to be postponed due to bad weather.
Before heading back to McLeodganj, the Dalai Lama traveled from Leh to Delhi last Thursday, where he underwent a routine medical check-up as a precautionary measure following his extended stay at high altitude.
During his stay in Ladakh, the Buddhist leader maintained a busy schedule. He visited Zanskar, where he inaugurated the Karsha Mega Summer Teaching, laid the foundation stone of the Zanskar Monlam Chorten, and delivered teachings to more than 21,000 devotees. In Leh, he laid the foundation for the new Jokhang Temple, blessed the Dharma Centre at Choglamsar, and addressed around 50,000 followers at Shewatsel on August 16–17, during which a long-life prayer was also offered in his honor.
The visit also saw thousands of devotees and several international dignitaries meeting him. Notably, he met Czech President Petr Pavel, who extended his greetings on the occasion of the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday.
His absence from McLeodganj had been felt by the local tourism sector, with hoteliers, restaurateurs, and taxi operators reporting a slowdown. His return is expected to revive activity in the hill town.
After a few days of rest, the Dalai Lama will participate in two special long-life prayer ceremonies on September 10 and 20 in McLeodganj, during which he will deliver teachings in person.
