Kiratpur–Manali Highway Shut Again After Rockfall; Ambulance Accident Near Dwada Leaves One Injured

Mandi: The Kiratpur–Manali National Highway has once again been closed for traffic between Mandi and Kullu following fresh incidents of rockfall near Banala in Mandi district. Continuous heavy rainfall has loosened slopes in the area, causing boulders to tumble onto the road and creating serious risks for travelers.
The highway had been temporarily reopened for a few hours on Saturday evening, allowing limited vehicular movement. However, with weather conditions worsening and safety concerns mounting, authorities ordered its closure later the same night. Officials said the risk of further landslides and debris flow remains high due to persistent rain.
In a troubling development this morning, an ambulance traveling on the route skidded off the road near Dwada and plunged down a slope. One person was injured in the incident and was promptly rescued. Efforts are underway with the help of a crane to retrieve the vehicle and bring it back to the roadside.
Meanwhile, the alternative route via Kmand–Katoula connecting Mandi and Kullu has also been blocked by landslides, cutting off direct road connectivity between the two districts.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised commuters to avoid travel in the region until further notice. Repair and clearance operations will begin on both the main and alternate routes as soon as weather conditions improve.
The district administration has assured that emergency services remain on standby and all necessary precautions are being taken to safeguard public safety. Residents and travelers have been urged to follow official advisories and cooperate with traffic police and disaster response teams.
