Teachers from the Education, Technical Education, AYUSH, and Medical Education departments who reach retirement age will now continue in service until the end of the academic session. The Finance Department issued a notification to this effect on Wednesday.

The move is in line with a Cabinet decision stipulating that no teacher should retire in the middle of an academic session. Apart from ensuring that students’ studies are not disrupted, this measure will also ease the financial burden on the cash-strapped state government by deferring pension-related payouts for those due to retire mid-session.

For the period beyond their official date of retirement, the teachers will be considered re-employed until the close of the academic year. During this re-employment, they will receive remuneration equal to the difference between their last drawn salary and the pension amount payable to them.

All other retirement benefits—such as gratuity, leave encashment, General Provident Fund, and commutation of pension, wherever applicable—will be released only after the completion of this sessional re-employment.
