700 Roads Closed in Himachal as Rainfall Surges 170% Above Normal in a Week

Shimla, Updated At : 19:03 PM Aug 27, 2025 IST
Relentless rainfall over the past several days has thrown life out of gear in Himachal Pradesh, leaving more than 700 roads blocked. In addition, 1,413 electricity distribution transformers and 420 water supply schemes have been disrupted. Officials believe the numbers could be higher, as the State Disaster Management Authority has not yet received updates from Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti due to connectivity issues.
Since Monday evening, most parts of the state have reported light to moderate rain, with several areas recording heavy to very heavy rainfall. In Upper Shimla, a landslide occurred at Kokunala in Kotkhai, while National Highway-5 in Kinnaur has been closed.
Mandi and Kullu districts have borne the brunt of the damage to infrastructure. Losses this monsoon have already crossed ₹2,400 crore, with the Public Works Department, Electricity Department, and Jal Shakti Department suffering the heaviest damage.
The situation is expected to worsen, as the state is unlikely to see respite from heavy rains in the immediate future. The Meteorological Department has issued yellow and orange alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall at several locations across the state until September 1.
Rainfall this month has already been 62% above normal. Over the past week alone, Himachal has received 170% more rain than the seasonal average, with Kullu, Shimla, and Solan districts recording more than double their usual rainfall.
