Chamba, Himachal Pradesh: NotOnMap, a community-driven sustainable tourism initiative founded in Chamba, has received international recognition at the Harvard–Tokyo University Asia Conference (ACONF) 2025. The event, held at the University of Tokyo from August 20–24, was organized by the Harvard College Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR).

Founder and CEO Kumar Anubhav was specially invited to present the NotOnMap model, which promotes community-based tourism with a focus on preserving cultural heritage, empowering rural communities, and offering authentic travel experiences. Anubhav also served as a judge during the competition segments of the conference.

Co-founder Manuj Sharma noted that HPAIR, which partners each year with a leading global university, provides a platform for students, entrepreneurs, and experts to explore innovative approaches in business, social impact, and sustainable tourism. This year’s conference brought together delegates from nearly 40 countries.

In his presentation, Anubhav showcased a case study on the NotOnMap framework and invited young delegates to propose solutions for adapting the model to diverse regions. “The best ideas will be incorporated into upcoming projects,” he said, adding that insights from the conference would also be shared with local communities in Chamba to strengthen resilient tourism economies.

Since its inception in Chamba, NotOnMap has expanded across India, connecting travelers with rural and heritage communities. Its model emphasizes preserving local cultures, fostering cultural exchange, and enhancing livelihoods.

Founded in 1991, HPAIR serves as a platform for dialogue on key economic, political, and social issues across the Asia-Pacific region. Past partners have included the World Bank, UNHCR, and Schwarzman Scholars. For 2025, confirmed partners include JR East (Japan’s metro operator) and the Institute for International Strategy and Information Analysis (IISIA).

Sharma added that collaboration with HPAIR will give NotOnMap access to a global network of innovators and thought leaders, enabling it to further strengthen and scale its impactful tourism model.
