Moderate to heavy rainfall since Sunday night has thrown life out of gear across several parts of Himachal Pradesh, prompting the closure of schools and colleges in five districts and blocking hundreds of roads, including two national highways.

In Mandi, heavy showers on Sunday flooded the Suketi Bridge, where a motorcyclist was seen cautiously making his way across.

Officials said that in view of the weather alert, educational institutions—except residential schools—in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una, Solan, and Mandi districts have been ordered shut.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), 484 roads across Himachal remained blocked as of Monday morning, including 245 in Mandi district and 102 in neighboring Kullu. National Highway 154-A, which connects Chamba with Pathankot, and National Highway 305, linking Aut with Sainj, are also closed.

The impact of the rains has further extended to essential services. Power supply has been disrupted with 941 transformers out of order, while 95 water supply schemes have also been affected.

The local meteorological department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in isolated areas across two to seven districts of the state, valid until August 30.

Since the onset of the monsoon on June 20 up to August 24, at least 155 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents, while 37 remain missing. The SEOC reported that the state has witnessed 77 flash floods, 40 cloudbursts, and 79 major landslides this season. The cumulative damage caused by rain-related events so far has been estimated at ₹2,348 crore.
