DA to Employees Once Financial Situation Improves: CM Sukhu
Shimla, August 21
Government employees in Himachal Pradesh waiting for Dearness Allowance (DA) will have to wait longer, as the pending installments will only be released once the state’s financial condition improves. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, addressing the Assembly, said that the state’s economic situation is currently weak, which is why the 3% DA announced in May has not yet been implemented. “Once the financial condition stabilizes, DA will be released,” he assured.
Reacting to the Opposition’s walkout over pending DA and arrears, CM Sukhu accused the BJP of double standards. He said that during their tenure, the BJP government had treated employees unfairly, even resorting to lathi-charges, and failed to implement the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). “Now the same people are pretending to be the protectors of employees’ rights,” he remarked.
The Chief Minister further said that the Opposition was indulging in politics in the name of employees, while the present government, despite economic challenges, was taking major decisions in their interest. He also pointed out that under BJP’s pressure, the central government stopped an additional borrowing of ₹1,600 crore, which adversely affected the state’s finances. “All dues of employees will be cleared once the financial position improves,” he reiterated.
Meanwhile, electricity bills of legislators also became a flashpoint during the session. The Chief Minister informed the House that some MLAs had received power bills for as many as 14 months. For instance, MLA Raghubir Singh Bali received a bill of over ₹6 lakh, despite not staying in Shimla for extended periods. Past arrears were also added to these bills. CM Sukhu assured that the matter would be investigated and said smart and prepaid meters would be installed in the future to ensure accurate billing for consumers.
